Abstract

A substantial number of decorated Old Kingdom tomb-chapels are published as line drawings, with few, if any, plates included to illustrate aspects of sculpturing technique. In order to establish the identity of fragments that might originate from such tombs, it is therefore necessary to place greater emphasis on subject matter as a criterion for identification, and less on details of style. This point is demonstrated in the study of two reliefs which can be attributed to the chapel of R'-ḥtp at Meydum. Their identification increases the number of fragments known from this chapel, and raises hopes that small reliefs from the same source have found their way into museum storerooms or private collections.
