Abstract

Abstract It is suggested that a formula which attempts to estimate the population of a dwelling from floor area must be restricted to homogeneous dwelling types. The population of a multifamily dwelling can be estimated as one‐sixth the floor area as measured in square metres. This is only a rough approximation, since the important factor for determining population density is the amount of sensory stimulation, not the amount of space. Unfortunately we do not know enough about the proxemic systems of various populations to utilize sensory stimulation as a predicting variable in estimating population size.
