Abstract

STUDIES ON WOMEN (i, 2) have indicated that the pH of the vagina falls as a result of estrogenic stimulation, and this conclusion was also reached in an investigation (3) of three rhesus monkeys (Macaco, mulatto,) that had been injected with estrone and whose vaginal pH was estimated by means of a glass electrode introduced directly into the vagina. It was not, however, in general agreement with observations on the normal cycle of the macaque (4) nor was it borne out by a series of 35 independent readings on 14 bilater′ally gonadectomizied rhesus macaques which were in various stages of estro′genie stimulation (5). Accordingly the following further observations were made on 12 gonadectomizied rhesus monkeys, which were being used in collateral studies. The glass electrode method was used to estimate the pH of saline washes of the vaginal contents obtained by aspirating the vaginal cavity
