Abstract

The morphology of the dinoflagellate genus Lissodinium Matz., emend. Carbonell-Moore was studied from cells collected in different parts of the world's oceans. The type species, Lissodinium schilleri, is redefined seventeen new species are described. No variation in the plate tabulation pattern was found. The apical pore complex consists of three platelets: a pore plate, a cover plate and a canal plate. The genus Lissodinium may also present an antapical spine. This feature was found in two of the new species. The differences between the species are based on cell size and shape, plate size and shape, presence or absence of spines, and on the kind of thecal pores
