First of all, both these lists require considerable revision. Bridge quite frequently occurs without the article (Brooklyn Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, Carquinez Bridge). Canal, when used for a natural feature, takes no article (Hood Canal, Lynn Canal). Desert is occasionally used without the article. Gulf often occurs without the article when the specific precedes (Coronation Gulf, Amundsen Gulf, Queen Maud Gulf).' In the case of river Professor McMillan refutes his own statement (see page 247, and note 14). From the original list of eight we are thus left with only three (coast, ocean, range). On the other hand, certain other generics might well be added. I nominate: archipelago, current, delta, divide, isthmus, plateau, shore. I have not yet come upon an example of any of these ten generics occurring without the article. I shall not, however, be greatly surprised if someone finds that they do occasionally so occur. To the list of 'variables' (highway, marsh, road, strait, swamp, valley) we should have to add the five rejects from the original 'invariable' list,
