Abstract

Opportunity to study Cucurbitaceae in herbaria in Tokyo, and in the People's Republic of China at Beijing, Wuhan, Chengdu, Guilin and Guangdong, provided by the kind hospitality of Academia Sinica, has enabled better understanding to be gained of certain taxa, especially in the genus Trichosanthes. This has necessitated some modifications to the specific concepts I adopted (Jeffrey 1980) in my checklist of the Cucurbitaceae of the Indian Sub-continent. Other modifications, resulting from the study of type specimens at the New York Botanical Garden and at the Gray and Arnold Arboretum Herbaria of Harvard University, and of types kindly sent on loan to Kew by the Komarov Botanical Institute, Leningrad, and the Indian Botanic Garden, Calcutta, are also presented. To the Directors and staffs of all institutes involved, I express my deep appreciation of their kind assistance in facilitating my studies.
