Abstract

These notes are merely preliminary to a much-needed revision of this almost entirely New World tribe, which is here delimited in the sense of Jeffrey (1964). Of the genera listed by Jeffrey (1962, 1963), the following are dealt with: Calycophysum Triana (under which Edmondia Cogn. and Bisedmondia Hutch. are placed in synonymy), Peponopsis Naud., Sicana Naud., Polyclathra Bertol. (including Roseanthus Cogn. and, newly placed into synonymy, Pittiera Cogn.) and Schizocarpum Schrad. in the subtribe Cucurbitinae; Cionosicys Griseb. (here transferred to this subtribe), Selysia Cogn. and Cayaponia Manso in the subtribe Abobrinae. For each of these are listed, as necessary, new records, synonymy, combinations and species, but in no case has an exhaustive review been attempted. The monotypic genera Abobra Naud., Tecunumania Standl. & Steyerm. and Penelopeia Urb. have not been revised. The first is well-understood and clearly a close relative of Cayaponia in the Abobrinae, the latter two little-known. Tecunumania is probably correctly placed in the Cucurbitinae, but Penelopeia, hitherto referred also to that subtribe, is perhaps a member of the Abobrinae. Further material of this genus is most desired for study. Finally, the economically very important genus Cucurbita L. itself is not treated here; it badly needs a modern revision that will, especially, correlate the findings of the great amount of recent experimental work on this genus with the older, classical studies of Naudin (1886) and Bailey (1943, 1948). It is hoped this will be possible at a later date. I am much indebted to many people for help in various ways. To Baltasar Trujillo of Maracay I am most grateful for his generosity in placing at my disposal not only his MS. notes on the genera of Cucurbitaceae in Venezuela, but also his considerable personal experience of this family in the field. Dr. Rogers McVaugh of Ann Arbor very kindly supplied me with a copy of his MS. notes on the members of this family in the Sesse & Mocifio Herbarium. To persons who have sent in new gatherings I am particularly indebted, especially to Dr. Julian A. Steyermark, Dr. Howard S. Irwin, Dr. Hugh Iltis, Prof. Leandro Aristeguieta, Dr. Homer V. Pinkley, Dr. Stefan Vogel and Dr. Peter H. Raven. I wish to thank the Directors of the following institutions for kindly sending on loan type and other specimens that have been indispensable for this study: the Komarov Botanical Institute, Leningrad; the Botanical Museum, Berlin-Dalhem; the Systematic-Geobotanical Institute, University of G6ttingen; the Natural History Museum, Vienna; the Botanical Conservatoire and Garden, Geneva; the Institute 'Antonio Jos6 Cavanilles', Madrid; the Economic Herbarium of Oakes Ames and the Gray Herbarium of Harvard University, Cambridge, U.S.A.; the Botanical Museum and Herbarium, Utrecht; the Emilio Goeldi Museum, Bel6m, Parai, Brazil; the National Botanical Garden of Belgium; the New York Botanical Garden; the Smithsonian Institution; the Museum of Natural
