Abstract

Studies were conducted to evaluate the strength and durability of isobutyl 2-cyanoacrylate bonds in vivo. The shear strength of silicone-sclera and silicone-silicone adhesive joints was tested in rabbit eyes during a one- and three-month period, respectively. Also, 63 sutureless scleral buckling operations were performed on rabbit eyes. At various intervals over 12 months, the eyes were enucleated for gross and histologic examination. Silicone-silicone adhesive joints remained strong in vivo, but silicone-sclera bonds weakened after several months. Because of the dangers of migration and extrusion of implanted materials, a completely sutureless technique for routine retinal detachment surgery is not recommended at this time. However, technical advances may make sutureless retinal surgery practical in the future.
