Abstract

The paper presents further results on the evaluation of a method for the auto-calibration of PI or PID controllers when a point of the frequency characteristics of the plant to be controlled (gain and phase) has been identified using for example.a closed loop “oscillation”experiment. The underlying design methodology is inspired by Kessler's “Symmetrical Optimum”[1958]. The methodtakes in account both robustness aspects and closed loop characteristics. In the case of a PID. the proposed method can be interpreted as a refinement of the Ziegler-Nichols second method rules for which a theoretical base is given. Simulations on various examples and experiments on a real plant conclude the paper
