Abstract

In 2003 the European Union enacted a directive concerning the assessment of vehicle related pedestrian safety. This directive contains a test procedure which uses a component test to assess the vehicle front [1]. Its configuration and significance is discussed controversially. Against the background of upcoming intelligent safety systems pure passive technical measures have to be reassessed. Referring to this, the Institute of Automotive Engineering at the Technical University of Berlin developed a procedure in order to assess the vehicle front concerning its pedestrian compatibility.
