Abstract
The amino acid compositions of guinea pig γ 1 and γ 2-anti-dinitrophenyl antibodies, their heavy and light polypeptide cahins, and their papain fragments have been determined. The portions of the molecules of these two classes of antibodies which are concerned with antibody specificity (Fab fragments) have bery similar compositions, consistent with their similar functional roles. In contrast, the portions concerned with biological activity (Fc fragments) have distinct composition, in keeping with th ability of γ 1 and γ 2-immunoglobulins to mediate different biological reactions. The present results are consistent with earlier studies of antigenic determinants and peptide maps.
