mill located in Selkirk, Manitoba, capable of producing 200,000 TPY of billets. Steel is produced in two 14-foot shell electric arc furnaces powered by 12.5 MVA transformers. The furnaces are charged with 54 tons of scrap and have an average tap-to-tap time of about 3 hours 25 minutes. MRM produces a full range of carbon steels from .05 maximum to 1.00% along with some low alloy grades. The furnaces feed two 2-strand curved mold casting machines producing four billet sizes 4, 5-1/4, 6-3/4 and 7-5/8 square. This paper discusses the furnace refractory practice at MRM and, in particular, changes in refractory practice which have taken place to complement changes in operating conditions to minimize downtime and costs.
