Abstract

INTRODUCTIONMOST poultry pathologists agree in differentiating two etiologies in the syndrome “chronic respiratory disease complex” in chickens. Mycoplasma gallisepticum causes chronic respiratory disease (CRD), or mycoplasmosis (Van Roekel and Olesiuk, 1953), while M. gallisepticum associated with Escherichia coli (Gross, 1956, 1958), infectious bronchitis virus (Adler et al., 1962; Bankowsky, 1961), or Newcastle disease virus (Adler et al., 1962; Adler and McMartin, 1962) causes the syndrome known as “air sac disease” or “chronic respiratory disease complex” (CRDC).Mycoplasmosis, a mild disorder, often is asymptomatic (Adler and McMartin, 1962); association with other microbial agents, however, and the effects of stress, may cause extensive organic damage and high mortality. Reports on the activity of drugs against PPLO are multiple (Domermuth, 1958, 1960; Domermuth and Johnson, 1955; Gale et al., 1967; Hamdy et al., 1957; Kumar et al., 1966; Olesiuk et al., 1956; Olsen et al., 1960; Perez, 1961; Van Roekel and Olesiuk,…
