Abstract

After a brief introduction concerning mycologists who have stimulated and thus moulded my fungal interests within a more general biological context, the particular ways in which a specific personal interest in the distribution, physiology and metabolism of sugars relate to fungi are outlined. The relevance of studies of sugars to fungal systematics, structure, physiology and biotechnology, and to pathogenic and mutualistic interactions involving fungi, are discussed within the context of the organization of the Society's Special Interest Committees. Possible ways by which fungi in their continual quest for carbon compounds could have influenced the colonization of land and subsequent evolution of vascular plants are speculatively mentioned.
