Abstract

A total of 99 species belonging to 50 genera of fungi were isolated from Casuarina leaf litter during 1988-90. Fungal population was maximum in humus litter and minimum in senescent leaves. Bacteria shows the same trend as fungi. Certain Primary saprophytes which dominated the senescent leaves and fresh litter disappeared in humus litter. Trichoderma viride which was not a prominent member in senescent leaf and fresh litter became the dominant one and occupied the first rank in partially decomposed and humus litter. Secondary saprophytes particularly members of the Mastigo-mycotina appeared in association with T.viride, Aspergillus niger and A. awamori to utilise the cellulose decomposed product.
