Abstract

Leading Scottish academics are expressing concern that the membership of the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council (SHEFC) does not adequately reflect the needs of research in Scottish universities. SHEFC will take over the Universities Funding Council's responsibilities for Scotland at the end of next month when the UFC is dissolved. These responsibilities include funding research in universities as one part of the dual support system – the UK research council are the other half of the system. But Scottish researchers are worried that none of the five research council chairmen, nor the chairman of the Advisory Board for the Research Councils (ABRC), are on the SHEFC. Underlying this concern is a fear that Scottish research may become isolated from other research in the UK and suffer in the competition for funds and influence.
