Abstract

In this chapter, the tribology in the machine element is generally explained. “Tribology” is defined as the science and technology of interacting surfaces in relative motion and the practices related thereto. In other words, it is the friction, the lubrication, and the wear. Concerning the fiction, Amonton and Coulomb’s law is explained, and it is confirmed that the frictional stress is due to the adhesion between surfaces and the first friction law that the frictional force is proportional to the normal load is recognized by the contact model proposed by Holm. Concerning the lubrication, the hydrodynamic lubrication, the boundary lubrication, and the mixed lubrication are explained by Stribeck diagram. In the hydrodynamic lubrication, the derivation of Reynolds equation and the analyses of the pressure distribution are explained, in the boundary lubrication, the boundary films, the lubricant, the additives, and so on are explained and in the mixed lubrication, the models are proposed. Concerning the wear, the wear models and the analyses of the wear amount are explained.
