Abstract
The similarity between the laws governing light transmission and shockwave propagation can be used to advantage to demonstrate the problems which are associated with correct interpretation and application of seismic methods. When used in the right context refraction seismic applications for foundation engineering constitute nondestructive in situ testing of the ground material. Recognition of this feature enables the engineer to use obtained results in a wider perspective.
