Abstract

We shall consider the thermal radiation phenomena from macroscopic point of view. Hence our linear dimension in the flow field is larger compared with the wave length of the radiation rays and our time scale is larger compared with the period of all frequencies contained in the radiation rays. In analogy of the theory of gasdynamics, our present theory of thermal radiation is similar to the continuum theory of gasdynamics instead of the kinetic theory of gas. Without further discussion of the foundation of this theory of thermal radiation, we shall represent the radiation of heat by heat rays in the following chapters. For those readers who would like to know more the limitation of the scales of length and time in the present theory, the classical book on the theory of heat radiation by Planck (reference 8) should be referred to.
