Abstract
High performance powder metallurgy reflects significant advances in the science and technology of powder production and subsequent powder consolidation. Powder processing methods involving the atomization of a stream of liquid metal are reviewed with particular reference to relationships between processing parameters and powder properties. These methods include gas and water atomization, several forms of centrifugal atomization and recent innovative approaches at the prototype or laboratory-stage of development. Where available, models and mechanisms of the atomization processes are detailed. To conclude, the role of cooling rate in powder processing, and implications re the characteristics of rapidly solidified powders are examined.
