Abstract

Fluid and electrolyte management is a fundamental aspect of the role of the neuroscience nurse. Hydrational and electrolyte status are crucial mediators to the extent of the neuro-hormonal response to trauma. This is of particular significance for those with neurological disorders, considering the vital role the central nervous system plays in the regulation of hydration and electrolyte status. This paper reviews the physiology related to the homeostatic maintenance of hydration and electrolyte status, while reviewing the criteria associated with an in-depth nursing assessment of hydrational and electrolyte status. Issues concerning accountability and role are acknowledged within the current context of contemporary nursing practice.
