Abstract

The authors' stated purpose is to produce for the student and practitioner a text which is "concise . . . and yet comprehensive." A completely successful compromise between these divergent, perhaps mutually exclusive, aims is probably impossible. In their attempt for completeness, the authors sometimes present facts without qualifications or attempts to place them into proper perspective and balance. For example, in a discussion of the platelet, it is stated "a plasma factor is required for normal platelet production and absence has been demonstrated to result in thrombocytopenia."
