Abstract

In accordance with the progress in engineering plastic, the applicable area of plastic gears becomes widespread and the required quality becomes higher. In the present paper, we propose a new simple finishing method for plastic gears, i.e., hot finish rolling, in which plastic work gears are finished by meshing with a heated die wheel. We make some assumptions in modeling the deformation mechanism of a material in hot finish rolling to present an approximate method of calculation for tooth flanks of finished gears. From the results of the calculation, we can obtain the fundamental information for design of a hot finish rolling rig. On the basis of this information, we design and fabricate the rig. Using this rig, experiments of hot finish rolling of plastic gears are carried out to reveal that hot finish rolling is the most effective method for finishing plastic gears.
