Abstract

To better understand the composition of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) deposits, samples were collected and analyzed by pyrolysis gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Several compound classes were identified as significant components of QCM deposits. A compound that was detected by Py-GC/MS could not be conclusively identified from the electron ionization fragmentation pattern. Indirect evidence inspired a guess for this compound’s structure as a pentamethyl substituted cyclohexylpyridine. This hypothesis was confirmed by de novo synthesis of the hypothesized compound. Using the compounds that were identified through the Py-GC/MS experiments, a spiking study was performed to investigate their effect on QCM deposit formation. Along with exploring the significant nitrogen compound classes, sulfur compounds and alkyl phenols were varied during the study which had an effect on oxidation rates and deposit formation.
