Abstract

There are several instances of engineering importance in which axial motion influences the linearized transverse vibration of a beam. Unexpected resonances can occur if the effect the axial motion has on the frequencies of the structure is not taken into account. Herein the method of assumed modes is used to estimate the fundamental frequencies of axially moving beams performing small transverse oscillations. The present procedure should also be applicable to the pipe and towed cable problems that are governed by similar differential equations.
