Abstract

Abstract This chapter gives an introduction to those facts and concepts that are fundamental to the theory of simplicial decompositions. We begin with a short section on terminology and notation, whose main purpose is to introduce simplicial decompositions in a formal way. There will also be a few other definitions, which may not actually be used until somewhere later in the book. They are included for completeness only and will be recalled when they are needed.
