Abstract

In this paper, a novel bipolar transverse flux motor with stator permanent magnet excitation is proposed based on the summary and analysis of the transverse flux motor and stator permanent magnet motor research achievements in recent years. It has been shown that the motor realizes the bipolar winding flux through the detailed analysis. The motor can be used as an inwheel motor in electric vehicles because of its external rotor and permanent magnets mounted on the stator radial surface. Secondly the basic structure and working principle of the motor are introduced. Then the relationship between the motor power and its dimensions is deduced. Thirdly the 3 dimensional finite element method(3D FEM) is used to analyze the static and transient characteristics, including the no-load magnetic field distribution and winding back EMF. Finally a three-phase 600W prototype has been made and the experimental analysis is carried out.

Highlights

  • With vigorously driving on the energy-saving and emission-reduction in the world, many large auto companies have increased the investment on the research of electric vehicles(EVs)

  • The winding flux is bipolar and can be induced to sinusoidal EMF[31]. It is more complex with FSPM motors to assemble its stator with many permanent magnets (PMs), the motor is still applied in many fields for its strong resistance to demagnetization with symmetrical magnetic circuit and for its bigger torque density and power density with its concentrated-flux effect[32]

  • A novel SPMTF motor is proposed based on the characteristics of transverse flux motor and stator permanent magnet motor according to the development requirements of automotive motor

Introduction

With vigorously driving on the energy-saving and emission-reduction in the world, many large auto companies have increased the investment on the research of electric vehicles(EVs). Q. Sun et al.: Fundamental Design and Analysis of a Novel Bipolar Transverse-Flux Motor with Stator Permanent-Magnet Excitation 61 winding in its rotor so that it is suitable for high speed operation[25]. The winding flux is bipolar and can be induced to sinusoidal EMF[31] It is more complex with FSPM motors to assemble its stator with many PMs, the motor is still applied in many fields for its strong resistance to demagnetization with symmetrical magnetic circuit and for its bigger torque density and power density with its concentrated-flux effect[32]. The BSPMTF motor has transverse PM flux and both the permanent magnets (PMs) and armature windings are located on the stator. The principle feasibility of BSPMTF motor and the correctness of the design are proven by experiments
