Abstract

We assessed the Kilpura–Khatima–Surai corridor area within the Terai Arc Landscape, India for tiger presence. Monitoring of tiger presence and movement was recorded by photo-captures generated by deploying camera traps in corridor area in the years of 2012 and 2014. This corridor is the only connectivity between Nandhour WLS and Pilibhit tiger reserve. A total of 17 tigers were recorded in all of the three forest ranges of the corridor assessed even utilizing the bottlenecks of the corridor, which indicates functionality of this important conduit between two bigger forest patches i.e. Nandhour wildlife sanctuary and Pilibhit tiger reserve. We highlight the importance of corridors for large mammals like tigers and elephants and discuss some key points in terms of management implications which could provide a way forward to maintain the functionality of the Kilpura Khatima Surai corridor.
