Abstract

The current trends in the development of combustion engines, such as higher engine efficiency and specific power output, are responsible for increasing loads on the crankshaft drive components. This affects in particular the piston-cylinder-system, which has a significant influence on the engine performance. The BMW Group and Kassel University present a method for tribological functional optimization of the system piston group/cylinder liner. This is done by adjusting the cylinder bore distortion and surface roughness. Therefore a coupled multi-body EHD simulation and design of experiments are used.
