Abstract
Four cases are presented in which the adult spleen failed to accumulate intravenously administered radiocolloid. The common etiology was obstruction (functional or anatomic) of major vessels supplying blood to the spleen. This was shown by autopsy in 2 cases, by angiography in one, and strongly suggested by a consistent clinical history in another. Such obstruction of the Splenic vasculature should be considered when peripheral blood findings suggest the loss of Splenic function in an adult. Because of the antomic proximity of the Splenic artery (celiac axis) to the renal arteries, obstruction of one of these should be an alerting sign to possible obstruction of the other.
