Abstract

Functional neurologic symptoms disorder (FNSD) refers to presenting symptoms that do not align with known neurologic anatomy or pathology. The prevalence of FNSD among pediatric populations varies. It is currently estimated to occur between 1 and 17 children per 100,000. It is the second most common diagnosis in outpatient neurology clinics and accounts for 5% to 20% of neurology referrals. Neurological and other medical comorbidities are common including pain. FNSD often leads to functional decline, and patients are often misdiagnosed with having a medical disorder, which leads to a delayed diagnosis and consequently unnecessary interventions and treatments.
