Abstract

Coal tar pitch for high performance carbon fiber was hydrogenated with tetralin and tetrahydroquinoline (THQ) at 410-470° C for 60 min. The molecular structure of each fraction of pitch before and after hydrogenation was characterized by estimating the concentrations of the functional groups on the basis of 1 H-NMR and elemental analysis data using a computer. The goal of the functional group analysis in this work was to determine the concentration of a selected set of functional groups; moreover it had visual and physical meanings. The result of functional group concentration provided more useful information for chemical structure of hydrogenated pitch, indicating the effects of two different solvents on hydrogenation of coal tar pitch
