Abstract

Frost, J. S. (Museum of Natural History, The University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kansas 66045) 1982. Functional genetic similarity between geographically separated populations of Mexican leopard frogs (Rana pipiens complex). Syst. Zool. 31:57-67.-The leopard frog Rana berlandieri is presently considered to be comprised of three subspecies: R. b. berlandieri; R. b. forreri; and R. b. brownorum. In two of the purported races, genetic similarity was investigated by assessing interpopulation genetic compatibility and spermatocyte bivalent formation in interpopulation hybrids. Primary structural components of racial mating trills were analyzed and compared. The data do not support the recognition of R. b. berlandieri and R. b. forreri as conspecifics. [Rana berlandieri; R. forreri; R. pipiens complex; genetic similarity; genetic compatibility; chromosome pairing; call analysis.]
