Abstract

Coal fly ash samples were used to investigate the thermochemical processing of the unburned carbon fraction and to obtain selective sorbents towards CO2. The unburned carbon (UBC) fraction was efficiently separated using sieving and froth flotation separation techniques. The unburned carbon samples were subjected to a chemical treatment with H3PO4, followed by a pyrolysis process and an activation step with steam at 900OC. The structure and characteristics of carbon materials resulted were determined. In addition, their surface was chemically modified by treating with monoethanolamine (MEA) and diethanolamine (DEA). All samples were tested for CO2 adsorption in temperature range of 35-120OC
