Abstract

This article explores the concept of functional borders, and argues that the changing nature of borders and the functions that these may be called to fulfill have implications for the sustainabiliry of security. This is particularly pertinent to our understanding of the types of social and economic interactions that exist within and among the countries of SEE that appear to consider as the guarantee of their future security, stability and economic prosperity their integration with the European Union.
