Abstract

Rabbit corneas were cryopreserved according to the method of Kaufman and Capella with a controlled rate of freezing and dimethyl sulfoxide as the cryoprotective agent or by extreme modifications of that method. There was less than a 50% decrease in corneal oxygen consumption (Qo2) in those corneas that were frozen and thawed according to the standard method, whereas Qo2was decreased by two thirds in the other groups. Ultrastructural changes in the epithelial and endothelial cells were also less severe in those corneas frozen by the standard method. The stromal cells appeared to be protected from structural damage in all experimental groups.
