Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to delimit functional and nodal regions in Nagano Prefecture. Regionalization has been done by the Functional Distance Method based upon interregional journey-to-work. A functional region is defined as an area where interactions among locational entities are taken. A nodal region is considered as a special case of a functional region, which has a single locational entity dominating all others. The results of the analyses in chronological order show the process by which isolated marginal entities have been integrated into functional regions. Ten nodal regions are observed where the final terminal entities are Nagano, Matsumoto, Ueda, Okaya, Oomachi, Ina, Iida, Kisofukushima, Minamishinano and Omi. This study has shown the nodal regions of Minamishinano and Omi, the subregion of Minamisaku and the isolated entities in South Ina area that other studies have overlooked.
