Abstract

Functional and cellular aspects of organ ageing are discussed. A model system is described for studying several aspects of organ ageing employing syngeneic, orthotopic transplantation of kidneys of old rats into young rats. These experiments have shown that there exists an age limit for donor kidneys to be used successfully in syngeneic transplantation in the rat. In the kidney of the old rat this is partly caused by an increased vulnerability of the epithelium of the proximal convoluted tubule to ischaemia. Indication exists that ageing of the connective tissue may also play a role.
