Functional Anatomy of the Newborn

Abstract

This first edition is the product of more than 20 years of experience in teaching anatomy by Crelin, professor of anatomy at Yale University School of Medicine. With the subspecialty of neonatology becoming one of the most progressive areas in pediatric research and achievements, there is certainly a need for a text covering the functional anatomy of the newborn as a ready reference for the neonatologist. Crelin published a large and detailed atlas on this subject in 1968, and the present volume is a synopsis of that atlas. The central theme throughout is that a newborn infant is not a miniature adult, and the primary differences between the two are stressed both from a functional and anatomical standpoint throughout the format, proceeding with the structures and organs of the head and neck, down to the lower extremities; afterward, brief introductory comments are made regarding body, weight, size, and proportions.
