Abstract

Although traditional methods of assessment — such as rubrics, checklists, skill tests, and quizzes — have long been viable methods of evaluation in physical education, they may at times seem boring or overwhelming. Yet, assessment can be as fun and interesting as the activities that are taught in physical education, and can help to increase students' performance outcomes. Teachers can offer multiple modes of assessment that address the diversity of learning styles in the classroom while still allowing curricular objectives to be met and achieved. Permitting students to choose their assessment preference based on their personal strengths and interests can give them a sense of ownership and increase their enthusiasm for successful completion of the assessment project. This article provides several alternative modes of assessment for all K-12 grade levels, all of which can be adapted to fit the needs of the school's physical education curriculum, teacher, or students.
