Abstract

On the basis of a new ray tracing idea, a program has been developed which simulates the propagation of sound in an environment. The unique feature of the method is that both the room and the ray are represented only in discrete points. The program is of great use at the planning stage of assembly halls, theatres, concert halls, studios, etc. The method described in this paper has two major advantages—that the time needed to apply it does not increase as the room to be analysed becomes more complex and that the input data are the simplest possible. The results achieved indicate that the method acts in the way intended and that it gives results exact enough for any application. The data produced by the program include, for an arbitrary room, the sound pressure level and time of arrival of the sound reflections originating from a source with an arbitrary radiation characteristic and reaching one or several given receiver points.
