Abstract

The elastic–plastic dynamic response of a fully backed circular sandwich plate subjected to central impact by a cylindrical projectile is presented. An analytical model is proposed by treating the top face sheet as an individual plate and the core as an elastic–perfectly plastic foundation. An elastic–plastic impact contact law is adopted. The numerical analysis is based on a minimum principle in dynamic plasticity in association with the finite difference technique. The time history for the impact force and the energy partitioning of the fully backed circular sandwich plate are studied. It is observed that the impact velocity and the mass of projectile have great effects on the dynamic behaviour of the fully backed circular sandwich plate.
