Abstract

Defence Research Establishment Atlantic has undertaken sea trials on the 75 tonne SWATH vessel Frederick G. Creed to obtain load, seakeeping, and structural response information. Data have been gathered through an array of pressure transducers and strain gauges. To extend the limited measured data to the full structure and to evaluate representative design load profiles, finite element models have been developed using the codes MAESTRO and VAST (a general purpose finite element (FE) code) for full ship and detail structure response. To verify the FE models, a calibrated static load test of the SWATH vessel was devised. Vibration frequencies were also measured and used to verify the dynamic response modelling, including proper representations of dry and added mass.
