Abstract

Abstract This chapter relates the main fuel gas applications in industry, emphasizing the main gases available for each segment such as natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, coke oven gas, and blast furnace gas. A short history of industrial heating by fuel gases and the differences between the concepts of batch and continuous processes helps to understand the role of gas firing systems and the main equipment such as burners, flow trains, and controls. Other fuel gas applications as feedstock, protective and active atmosphere, lubricant and demolding, propellant, and foam‐blowing agent are also discussed. Some industrial segments are detailed such as steel mills, foundries, ceramic industry, glass works, thermal utilities, rubber industry, food segment, and chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Also, some highlights of synthetic natural gas and replacement of electrothermal by fuel gas are presented.
