Abstract

This chapter provides an overview of recent developments in anode catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). While much of the existing research has focused on the cathode, it is also important to consider the anode, as issues with anode catalysts can significantly impact the performance and durability of PEMFCs. The chapter examines various adverse circumstances, including poisoning, cell reversal, and low platinum loading, and discusses the mechanisms and effects of each. Additionally, the chapter summarizes recent research on functional catalysts and identifies gaps in the current understanding of anode catalyst layer research in PEMFCs, aiming to provide recommendations for future research in this important area.
