Abstract
The emergence and growth of research on fuel additives, dictated by technology improvements and toughened ecological standards, are discussed. Leading experts in this field and key Russian scientific schools and their contributions to the development of domestic additives and import substitution are mentioned. Prospects for new developments are outlined.
