Abstract

Vanadium doped cadmium phosphate glasses xV 2O 5–(50− x)CdO–50P 2O 5 with 0≤ x≤20 mol% were prepared and FTIR, Raman, EPR and optical absorption measured. Infrared and Raman investigations show the formation of P–O–V and V–O–V bonds, which replace P–O–P ones. The simulations of EPR spectra of most glass samples 2.5≤ x≤10 mol% reveal a superposition of two resonance signals. Spin Hamiltonian parameters indicate that the VO 2+ ions are present in octahedral sites with tetragonal compression and belong to C 4v symmetry. The molecular bonding coefficient β 1 2 and ε π 2 show an appreciable degree of covalency.
