Abstract

Combustion of ammonium perchlorate, carbon and sulfur (75:15:10) mixture in open air produces CO 2 and SO 2, as detected by i.r., as major products, along with small amounts of NH 3 and HCl. However, no NH 3 is observed when the ternary mixture is ignited in a closed Ar atmosphere. This could be due to the oxidation of NH 3 to NO and NOCl. Addition of KNO 3 to the ammonium perchlorate ternary mixture by the wet method does not show the reaction proposed previously, as bands from K 2SO 4 in the combustion products are observed. The major combustion products are CO 2, SO 2 and K 2SO 4. There is no visible trace of HCl, possibly owing to oxidation.
