Abstract
A semiclassical analytic theory which describes the excitation of atomic Rydberg states by intense laser radiation is formulated in the multiphoton limit of ionization. The theory is based on the separation of the electron motion in fast oscillations in the laser field and slow scattering in the Coulomb field of the nucleus. It allows one to calculate classical cut-off positions in the distribution of excited atoms in principal and orbital quantum numbers, and to identify the effect of quantum interference.
