Abstract

Frugifer : a lion-faced Mithraic deity described by Arnobius In Adversus Nationes, 6, 10, Arnobius, a Christian of early fourth century AC, describes a god who is called « Fruitful », has a roaring lion's head and is painted red. It was probably a god who was worshipped in the cult of Mithras : some inscriptions attest the name "Frugifer" and the archaeological testimonia correspond with the description of the author. Iconographical evidence shows that this divinity was a syncretism : a god of Time (Aion), of Fire, of Fecundity, having a lot of attributes (keys, sceptre, thunder, snake, and so on).
